Although unemployment rates are at their highest in a generation, earlier this week, the United States Senate used a procedural maneuver to kill an amendment offered by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) that would have protected American jobs by extending the critical E-Verify program through September 2014.

The amendment, attached to the $410 Omnibus Appropriations bill (H.R. 1105) to fund the federal government until September 30, 2009, sought to provide a long-term reauthorization of E-Verify. The bill currently contains a short-term, six-month extension of E-Verify which is just an effort to hold E-Verify hostage so that members of Congress can pair a long-term extension of E-Verify with mass amnesty legislation.
Here is what I need you to do:
FAIR has diligently worked to preserve this essential program and secure a permanent reauthorization of E-Verify. Notably, our online petition currently has over 16,000 names of people who stand by us on this important program. However, preserving this program, one that helps to ensure available jobs to go legal workers, is turning out to be a tough battle. AND IT SHOULD NOT BE!
If there was ever a doubt that we must have a unified voice to protect the American worker and stabilize economic conditions for the American middle class it is quite clear after this vote that we must stand together. I am counting on you to join me in the fight to protect American jobs whether it is in times of plenty or in times of need.

Together, we can put the interests of the American public ahead of special interests.

Sincerely,
Dan Stein, President
